SENATOR Stuart Syvret’s 20-year States career came to an end today. The head of the Privileges and Procedures Committee formally announced in the States that the poll-topping Senator had been disqualified from office after spending six months away from the Island.
Juliette Gallichan, the Constable of St Mary, said that the former Senator would receive his States’ pay for one more month.
Mr Syvret left Jersey in October, saying that he was claiming ‘political and legal asylum’ in London because he could not get a fair trial on the data protection and motoring charges that he faces. Those charges are now on hold, and his arrest has been ordered in Jersey after he failed to turn up to court hearings.
In statements made on his internet blog Mr Syvret, who has been posting for some time as ‘ex-Senator Stuart Syvret’ and whose name was not included at roll-call when the States convened this morning, has said that he would wait to become disqualified from office and then stand in the resulting by-election to finish the last 18 months of the term.
