Former Senator Stuart Syvret has been jailed for ten weeks and faces heavy fines after being found guilty of three counts of contempt of court.
He was offered community service but refused.
The former Father of the House was also found guilty of two breaches of the island's Data Protection Law and a number of motoring offences.
He was fined a total of £4,200 and ordered to pay a £10,000 contribution towards the cost of the prosecution.
The data protection breaches related to an entry on his blog in March last year. In it he published a confidential police investigation into allegations that a nurse was killing patients at Jersey's General Hospital.
The path to prison
Syvret says he will appeal against the sentence and the fines.
