We will continue to build, says minister

By Ben Quérée

The site at Wolf’s Caves is one of the coastal areas earmarked for redevelopmentTHERE will be no blanket ban on coastal developments, Environment Minister Freddie Cohen has told the States.

Just two days after an estimated 7,000 Islanders attended the ‘Line in the Sand’ protest at St Ouen’s Bay, Senator Cohen told the States that there would be no end to building work on the coast. The protestors were demonstrating against inappropriate coastal development.

‘It is necessary to be extremely careful when considering applications for coastline sites and to ensure that they are of the highest standards,’ said Senator Cohen. ‘There is a case for good, contemporary design in coastal locations provided that there is excellent design.

‘It is not necessary to design solely in the traditional vernacular – you can have either. Whichever one chooses it has to be excellent in design and excellent in quality of construction.’
