A CROYDON-born carer at a former children's home in Jersey will stand trial today charged with 19 counts of indecent assault.

Gordon Wateridge, 78, worked as a house parent at Haut de la Garenne in St Martin in the 70s.

He was the first person to be charged in connection with a historic child abuse investigation on the island, and now lives in the Jersey parish of St Clement.

He is charged with 19 counts of indecent assault and one count of incitement to indecent assault involving five victims between 1970 and 1974.

He is also charged with one count of assault involving a sixth victim.

Wateridge denies all charges.

The trial will start at 10am at the Royal Court, St Helier.
