John Hemming MP has written to Jack Straw MP to ask him to monitor the arrest of Senator Stuart Syvret in Jersey this morning (at 9am).
John Hemming MP In the letter he said:"At 9am this morning 8 police officers in 4 police cars came to arrest Senator Syvret at his home in Jersey in relation to Data Protection. At the time of writing I have been unable to contact Stuart. I am worried that this seems to be an arrest driven by political motivations. Senator Syvret has recently revealed detailed evidence relating to a nurse in Jersey who may have murdered a number of patients. He has also been working with me to try to get the rule of law to operate in respect of the investigations into child abuse in childrens homes on Jersey."
"A detailed dossier with all the evidence for these matters has been provided to the Ministry of Justice. Our attempt for judicial review failed on the argument that we should have taken legal action in Jersey. However, the Jersey law officers indicate that there is no way in which they can be brought to account for decisions in respect of criminal matters in Jersey."
"The arrest this morning seems to be motivated by political reasons, but at the time of writing I am unable to make contact with either Senator Syvret or his lawyer."
"The UK Ministry of Justice do have a responsibility for the rule of law in jersey. I am, therefore, asking you to monitor in detail the activities of the government in Jersey in having an arrest that appears driven by political objectives and intervene to ensure that the rule of law applies."
