Anger at lotto rapist award claim

Iorworth Hoare served 16 years in jail
The daughter of a woman attacked by a serial rapist who won the lottery has described reports he is paying her £100,000 compensation as ridiculous.

Iorworth Hoare was jailed for life in 1989. In 2004 he won more than £7m on the lottery while on day release.

He now lives in a £700,000 mansion in Ponteland, Northumberland.

The retired teacher, called Mrs A, claimed damages for psychological damage she suffered in the attack by Hoare in Roundhay Park, Leeds, in 1988.

She reached an out-of-court settlement in March after taking her claim to the High Court.

Charity donation

But her family said they had been angered by claims in some national newspaper reports she was paid £100,000.

Her daughter, who wished to remain anonymous, told BBC Look North: "We wish... [but it is] absolutely nothing like that.

"If it were, then the charities that she has donated to would have benefited a little bit more."

The retired teacher had been distressed by the recent reports, her daughter said.

"It was as if she'd just found out that he'd been released and when he won the money," she said.

"She didn't know anything about it at all, she's very distressed.

"I can tell immediately she regresses - she's back as a victim and it's just not fair.

"It's terrible to watch because there's nothing... that anyone can do to help her.

"She's the one that goes through it... we're the people that watch and we are helpless."

Hoare was convicted of the attempted rape of Mrs A and jailed for life in May 1989.

He had six previous convictions for rape, attempted rape and indecent assault and spent 16 years in prison.
